Fall-winter 2023-2024 fashion trends

Hello mes fashionistas !

I hope you had a great weekend in the sun! THE very mild temperatures don't encourage us to clean up our summer wardrobe, but fall is here and it's time to look at the season's trends! If some are repeated to the point of being become essential (total denim or leather look, faux fur, visible lingerie), I noticed some new items which are worth the detour and are blowing a breath of fresh air, whether you like them or not…

In this now well-established bi-annual meeting, I share with you my decryption of 10 fall-winter 2023-2024 trends which caught my attention during the four main Fashion Weeks from New York, London, Milan and Paris last February, to adopt to be at the forefront of fashion this season! (Source Vogue.com, Elle.fr, Cosmopolitan.fr, Vanityfair.fr).

1. They treat him

Classic and versatile, tartan lends itself to many styles: glam-rock, preppy, punk, grunge, etc… Favorite motif of the English designer Vivienne Westwood, it served as a common thread for the various collections of the fall-winter season. We find him at Andreas Kronthaler (artistic director of the Vivienne Westwood house since the death of his wife in December 2022), Burberry, Saint Laurent, Etro, Christian Dior, Stella McCartney and Thom Browne.

This multi-colored checked wool fabric is typical of Celtic peoples and associated with Scottish clans since the 18th century, identifiable thanks to the designs and colors used. The tartan print can be worn as a total look by combining checks of different sizes, and on all the pieces of the wardrobe (jacket, skirt, pants, dress, blouse, sweater). For the less daring, it will be ideal as an accessory to brighten up a sober gray or black look (scarf, bag or socks).

2. The skirt over pants

The Y2K revival has punctuated the fashion shows for several seasons, with designers having fun revisiting the codes of the 90s and 2000s (crop top, total denim look, cargo pants, etc.). In the vein of layering dear to the decadeall that was missing was the pants under the skirt, and this is done with Fendi, Givenchy, Chanel or Courrèges who decline it in various ways: short and pleated in a kilt style, long and slit, asymmetrical, in knit, in tweed, etc…

3. Shoulder games

A recurring trend for several years, structured and protruding shoulders adorn many jackets, blazers and even perfectos, inspired by power dressing imagined by Giorgio Armani in the 70s and 80s. Symbols of the business woman powerful and conqueringwe regularly find them at Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, Versace or Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood.

In a more sensual spirit, the shoulders become bare thanks to asymmetrical cuts that reveal one shoulder and promote head carriage: the dress one-shoulder emulated at Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, Giambattista Valli, in knitted version at Louis Vuitton and Max Mara, or in garnet red draped leather at Alexander McQueen. Sumptuous!

4. Tie or ascot?

In an increasingly fashionable gender fluid, men wear skirts and women wear ties! Nothing new you might say since as early as 1966 with the tuxedo, Yves Saint Laurent had drawn from the men's wardrobe to exacerbate the femininity of these models. Valentino dresses all the silhouettes in its “Black Tie” collection with a tie, but we also find it at Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Alexander McQueen, Rokh and Thom Browne, mainly on black and white looks.

Since the superb Celine fall-winter 2019 collection, the neo-bourgeois style leaves its mark on the collections. Synonymous with discreet luxury, the bow or pussy-bow collar appears in an oversized version at Vivienne Westwood, Balenciaga, Etro and Saint Laurent for a romantic and dramatic look with old-fashioned charm.

5. Red and gray

Elected Pantone color of the year 2023, “Viva Magenta” is a rich and festive carmine red. Red is therefore asserting itself as the flagship color of the season at Alexander McQueen, Hermès, Alberta Ferretti, Patou and Dolce & Gabbana: synonymous with passion and daring, it is lively or deep like ruby red and garnet. The other colors favored by almost all designers are neutral and natural: gray, chocolate, beige (available in shades of sand, café au lait, ocher, camel), without forgetting metallic silver or gold.

THE vibrant colors (burnt orange, bright yellow, turquoise, fuchsia, emerald) and pastel shades (dragee pink, sea green, chick yellow, parma, baby blue) remain a strong trend for a smooth transition to the winter season, spotted at Victoria Beckham, Prada, Givenchy, Versace and Zimmermann. In terms of associations, we retain the monochrome about (Hermès, Michael Kors, Fendi, Max Mara, Giorgio Armani), le black and white combo (Valentino, Balmain, Carolina Herrera, Nina Ricci) and the look bicolore (black + color).

6. Abstract landscapes

Clothing as a work of art? This is the bias taken by certain stylists who decorate their creations withabstract postcard-style prints, in the form of landscapes, frescoes, photographic or pictorial reproductions. Spotted at Coperni (which illustrates the fable “The Wolf and the Lamb” by La Fontaine on two leather jackets), Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood (who pays homage to his wife with a top bearing her image), Stella Mc Cartney ( which inserts photos of horses in sepia mode on its slip dresses) or the Milanese brand Act N°1.

My favorite is the dresses with clean lines presented by the Rabanne house, the result of a collaboration with the Gala-Dali Foundation who authorized her to reproduce five surrealist works by the Catalan painter Salvador Dali, friend of the creator Paco Rabanne who died in February 2023. These trompe-l'oeil evocations offer us a dreamlike break as well as a desire to escape…

Good surprise for the winter season, we like their retro spirit which evokes the Sweet life or timeless French chic. To discover in satin version on transparent pieces at Nina Ricci and Miu Miu. in all sizes and colors at Marni, in total look at Benetton, available in the form of pearly beads and rhinestone cabochons at Balmain, micro polka dot version at Philosophy Di Lorenzo or giant pellets chez Valentino.

Renowned for its houndstooth and checks, Chanel diverts theiconic white camellia of the house to affix it to pieces of black tweed: seen from a distance, the relief effect is deceptive, offering an original and playful way to divert the polka dot pattern!

8. Le workwear

The workwear (or officewear) means office attire. In the vein of empowerment, he borrows pieces from the men's wardrobe for a classic and sober look in a coordinated suit (jacket + skirt, jacket + pants) or three-piece suit, without forgetting the essential tie. The novelty lies in the choice of finishes, cuts and materials to bring sensuality by revisiting the codes: low waist, slit skirt, dizzying neckline.

True to his androgynous styleSaint Laurent combines blazers with square and manly shoulders with ultra feminine slit skirts. Miu Miu offers knit skirt suits, while Rokh introduces leather bustier and exposed lingerie for a working girl sexy. To be found at Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Dries Von Noten, Stella McCartney or Prada.

9. Maximalism

As opposed to minimalism which advocates purity and monochrome, the maximalist wants to be extravagant, joyful and unbridled : place for mixing prints (checks with stripes, polka dots with flowers), mixing styles, multi-colored pieces, accumulation and layering. Although the trend is not new, it has become evident since the period of uncertainty and even anxiety linked to Covid, as a need for comfort and optimism !

To be found at Gucci (the master of mix and match), Etro (with its folk and colorful outfits), Burberry (and its Scottish debauchery), Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood, Ulla Johnson and even Moschino. Even the classic Chanel house lends itself to the game by combining polka dots and lace, houndstooth knit with floral knit! Do you dare to adopt this trend? antidote to gloom ?

10. 50s style

After the 60s and 70s, a notable return to a decade that sublimated women. The 50s style revisited for 2023 is inspired by “New Look” silhouette created by Christian Dior in 1947 : fitted jacket, defined waist, voluminous petticoat. To be found at Dior of course (which for the occasion is reissuing the heel created by Roger Vivier), Balmain, Versace and Bottega Venetta.

Femininity and glamor are evoked with the blouse + pencil skirt combo, cocktail dresses, strapless dresses, fitted corsets, swing skirtsmidi or knee-length skirt suits, peplum jackets, retro floral prints, noble materials (taffeta, satin, chintz, flannel).
